The total in NBA betting — also called the over/under — is the combined points scored by both teams. You bet whether the final score will be higher or lower than the line.
How It Works
Example: Lakers vs. Celtics — Total: 226.5
- Over: Combined score 227 or more — you win
- Under: Combined score 226 or fewer — you win
- If the total lands on exactly 226.5: Impossible to push with a half-point; someone wins
Standard juice is -110 on both sides, meaning you bet $110 to win $100.
What Moves NBA Totals
- Pace of play: Fast-paced teams generate more possessions = more scoring opportunities
- Injuries to key scorers: A star out significantly drops the total
- Back-to-back games: Teams on back-to-backs play slower, more defensively
- Referee assignments: Some ref crews call more fouls = more free throws = higher scores
- Altitude and travel: Road teams on long road trips score fewer points
Quarter and Half Totals
You can also bet on individual quarters or halves. First-half totals are popular because they isolate early-game pace and reduce variance from late-game garbage time.
