What Is the Opening Line Vs Closing Line

The opening line is the first price posted by a sportsbook for a game. The closing line is the final price right before the game starts. The journey from open to close tells you a lot about where the smart money went.

When Lines Open

NFL lines typically open Sunday night or Monday for the following weekend's games. NBA and MLB lines often post a day or two before the game. The opening line is set by oddsmakers using power ratings and proprietary models, but at limited bet amounts.

Why Opening Lines Move

Opening lines move for several reasons:

Sharp action: Professional bettors immediately analyze new lines for mispricing. If the opening line is off, sharp money moves it quickly — sometimes within minutes of posting.

Public action: Recreational bettors place money throughout the week, often on popular teams. Heavy public betting on one side pushes the line toward that side.

New information: Injury reports, weather forecasts, lineup announcements, and other news that emerges during the week moves lines.

What Opening-to-Close Movement Tells You

When a line moves significantly:

  • If it moved with public betting: the popular side bet it into a worse number; the other side may now be value
  • If it moved against public betting (reverse line movement): sharp money is on the minority side — a stronger signal

Comparing the opening line to the closing line gives you historical context: was the move driven by public money, sharp money, or news?

Closing Line Value

Consistently getting better odds than the closing line is called positive closing line value (CLV). It's the strongest predictor of long-term betting profitability. If your bets consistently close at better prices than what you paid, you're demonstrating genuine edge.
