A teaser is a modified parlay that lets you adjust the point spread or total in your favor — at the cost of reduced payouts. They're popular in NFL and NBA betting and, in specific situations, offer genuine mathematical value.
How Teasers Work
In a standard 6-point NFL teaser:
- Any spread in your teaser can be moved by 6 points in your favor
- You still need to win all legs for the teaser to pay out
- The price you receive is lower than a straight parlay at the original numbers
Example, 2-team 6-point teaser:
- Chiefs -10 becomes Chiefs -4 (moved 6 points in your favor)
- Bengals +1 becomes Bengals +7 (moved 6 points in your favor)
- Both need to cover their new numbers for the teaser to win
Standard pricing: -120 for a 2-team 6-point NFL teaser (you bet $120 to win $100)
When 6-Point NFL Teasers Have Value
The value in teasers comes from crossing key numbers. In the NFL, the most common margins of victory are 3 and 7. Moving a line across these numbers has outsized value.
High-value teaser spots:
- Underdog from +1.5 to +7.5 (crosses both 3 and 7)
- Favorite from -8.5 to -2.5 (crosses both 7 and 3)
Low-value teaser spots:
- Moving a favorite from -14 to -8 (crosses only 10, a less critical number)
NBA Teasers
NBA teasers are generally not recommended. Basketball games distribute margins more evenly across the scoring range, so there are no key numbers as impactful as 3 and 7 in football. The value of buying points in basketball is minimal compared to NFL.
