What Is a Teaser Bet Explained

A teaser bet is a modified parlay that lets you move the point spread in your favor across multiple games — in exchange for lower odds. They're popular, frequently misunderstood, and occasionally contain real value depending on the sport and the numbers.

How Teasers Work

A standard 6-point NFL teaser lets you move each spread by 6 points on up to 10 games. You still need to win all legs, but you get a more favorable number.

Example: Two-team 6-point teaser

  • Chiefs -7 becomes Chiefs -1
  • Eagles -3 becomes Eagles +3
  • You need both to hit. If either fails, the teaser loses.

The price: instead of paying -110 per game on a parlay, you typically get worse parlay odds. A 2-team teaser might pay -120. A 3-team teaser might pay +180 instead of +600 on a parlay.

When NFL Teasers Have Value

The value in NFL teasers comes from crossing key numbers. In football, the most common margins of victory are 3 and 7 (field goal and touchdown). Moving a spread across these numbers has disproportionate value.

A teaser that moves a favorite from -7.5 to -1.5 crosses both 7 and 3. A teaser that moves a favorite from -9 to -3 only crosses through less meaningful numbers.

The strategy: only include games where you cross 3 or 7 in your teaser. This is called "teasing through the key numbers" and is the basis of systems like Wong Teasers (underdogs of +1.5 to +2.5, tease up to +7.5 to +8.5).

When Teasers Are a Trap

Most recreational teasers are weak. Adding games just to get a bigger payout increases the ways to lose without proportionate value. A 7-team teaser might look appealing at +600, but the required win rate to be profitable is very high.

Rule of thumb: 2-team teasers through key numbers in NFL have documented positive expectation in certain historical samples. More than 3 teams becomes increasingly negative expectation.
