Props and futures are both non-game-outcome bets, but they operate on completely different timeframes and analytical frameworks.
Player Props
A prop bet is a wager on a specific player or team statistical outcome within a single game.
Examples:
- Patrick Mahomes over/under 287.5 passing yards tonight
- LeBron James over/under 27.5 points + rebounds + assists
- First touchdown scorer in Sunday's game
Props settle after that specific game. They're highly sensitive to single-game factors: weather, matchup, injury status of teammates, game script.
Futures Bets
A futures bet is a wager on a season-long or longer-term outcome.
Examples:
- Super Bowl champion at the start of the season
- NBA MVP winner
- Team win total over/under (52.5 wins)
- A specific player to win Rookie of the Year
Futures settle weeks or months after you place them. Your money is tied up for the entire period.
