A handicap bet gives one team or player a virtual head start (or deficit) before the game begins, creating a more level betting market.
Why Handicaps Exist
When one team is a heavy favorite, a straight moneyline might be -400 or worse. Handicap betting creates an alternative where you can bet the favorite at better odds if they cover the handicap, or back the underdog at worse odds if they don't need to cover.
Types of Handicap Bets
Point spread (US terminology): The most common form. The favorite gives up points; the underdog gets points. Settle at -110 on both sides.
European handicap: No push option. Handicaps are whole numbers, and if the margin equals the handicap, the favorite loses the bet.
Asian handicap: Eliminates the push by using half or quarter goals/points. Bet is split between two lines on quarter handicaps.
Handicap Betting in Practice
- NFL: Chiefs -7.5 means Kansas City must win by 8+
- Soccer: Liverpool -1.5 means Liverpool must win by 2+
- Tennis: Djokovic -3.5 games (set handicaps or game handicaps)
What Creates Value
Oddsmakers set handicaps to balance action, not to be perfectly calibrated. When the public overvalues a team's chance of covering, there's value on the other side.
