A half-point in sports betting refers to the fractional number on a spread or total that prevents a push. It's also the unit of value when "buying points" at most sportsbooks.
Why Half-Points Exist
In NFL betting, teams commonly win by key numbers: 3, 7, 10, 14. If a spread lands on exactly 3, both sides push — nobody wins or loses. Sportsbooks add .5 to prevent this.
- Patriots -3 (push possible if Patriots win by exactly 3)
- Patriots -3.5 (no push possible — Patriots must win by 4+)
The Value of a Half-Point at Key Numbers
The half-point around 3 in NFL betting is worth approximately 1.0-1.5% in win probability. Around 7, it's worth about 0.8-1.0%.
This is why "buying points" to move a spread from -3 to -2.5 or from +2.5 to +3 costs extra juice (typically -130 vs. -110 standard).
Should You Buy Points?
Generally no, unless you're crossing a key number. Moving from -6 to -5.5 in NFL costs the same as moving from -3 to -2.5 but has far less value, since 5.5 isn't a key number.
The math only works in your favor when buying or selling through 3 or 7 in football.
