What Is a Bet Slip

A bet slip is the confirmation form — digital or physical — that captures every detail of your wager before you lock it in.

If you've ever wondered what that panel on the right side of a sportsbook app is, that's your bet slip. Understanding it fully is one of the most practical things a beginner can do.

What Does a Bet Slip Contain?

When you tap on an odds number in a sportsbook app, the selection automatically populates your bet slip. A standard digital bet slip shows:

  • Selection — the team, player, or outcome you're betting on
  • Bet type — moneyline, spread, total, parlay, etc.
  • Odds — the current price for your selection
  • Stake — the amount you're choosing to wager
  • Potential payout — what you'd receive if the bet wins, including your stake back

Review every field carefully before hitting "Place Bet." Odds can change between the moment you tap them and the moment you confirm, a process called line movement.

Single Bet Slips vs. Parlay Bet Slips

A single bet slip contains one selection. Simple and straightforward — you pick a winner, enter your stake, and submit.

A parlay bet slip contains multiple selections combined into one bet. Each leg of the parlay is listed on the slip. All legs must win for the parlay to pay out. The potential payout shown will be much higher than a single, but so is the risk.

Most apps let you switch between "single" and "parlay" mode on the same slip if you've added multiple selections.

Common Bet Slip Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not checking the odds before confirming — prices shift in real time and your slip may reflect a stale number
  • Ignoring the payout vs. stake ratio — make sure the potential return makes sense for the risk
  • Leaving partial parlays — some apps allow you to accidentally submit a parlay missing a leg
  • Betting more than intended — always verify your stake field before submitting

After your bet is confirmed, you'll receive a bet confirmation with a reference number. Keep that handy in case there's ever a dispute.
