Sports betting offers more bet types than most new bettors realize. Understanding all of them helps you find the best opportunities across different markets.
Game Bets
Spread: The most common bet type. Bet a team to win by more than the spread (favorite) or lose by less (underdog). Standard price: -110 each side.
Moneyline: Pick who wins outright. No spread. Favorites at negative odds, underdogs at positive.
Total (over/under): Bet whether combined score is over or under the posted number.
First-half/second-half bets: Halftime lines for just the first or second half of the game. These open at halftime for second-half bets.
Alternate lines: Most books offer alternative spreads and totals at adjusted prices. A -3 team might be available at -6.5 for better odds or at -1 for worse odds.
Multi-Game Bets
Parlay: Combine 2+ selections. Must win all legs. Higher payout, higher risk.
Teaser: Move spreads in your favor across 2+ games. Pay for the movement with reduced odds.
Round robin: Create multiple smaller parlays from a group of selections.
Player and Game Proposition Bets (Props)
Player props: Bet on individual player statistical outcomes (passing yards, points scored, home runs).
Game props: Bet on specific game events (first TD scorer, highest scoring quarter, OT yes/no).
Same-game parlay (SGP): Combine player props and game markets from the same game into one bet.
Futures
Championship futures: Who wins the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, etc.
Win totals: Over/under on a team's season win total.
Award futures: MVP, Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, etc.
Live Betting
All of the above (spread, moneyline, total, props) can be bet in real time after a game starts, with continuously updated odds.
