Sports Betting Terms for Beginners

Learning sports betting without knowing the vocabulary is like playing poker without knowing the hands — you'll lose before you start.

This glossary covers the most important sports betting terms every beginner needs to know before placing a single dollar.

Core Betting Terms

  • Action — any active bet you have placed
  • Bankroll — the total amount of money you've set aside for betting
  • Book / Sportsbook — the company or platform that takes your bets
  • Handle — the total amount of money wagered on a given game or event
  • Juice / Vig — the sportsbook's built-in commission on every bet (usually around -110)
  • Line — the current odds or point spread on a game
  • Sharp — an experienced, professional-level bettor

Bet Type Terms

  • Moneyline — a straight-up bet on who wins, no point spread involved
  • Point spread — a margin of victory that the favorite must cover to win the bet
  • Over/Under (Total) — a bet on the combined score going over or under a set number
  • Parlay — multiple bets combined into one; all must win for a payout
  • Teaser — a parlay where you adjust the spread in your favor, at lower odds
  • Prop bet — a wager on a specific event within a game (e.g., which player scores first)
  • Futures — a bet on an outcome that will be decided weeks or months away (e.g., Super Bowl winner)
  • Live bet / In-play — a bet placed while the game is already in progress

Odds and Payout Terms

  • American odds — the standard U.S. format using +/- numbers (e.g., -110, +200)
  • Favorite — the team or player expected to win; shown with a minus sign (-)
  • Underdog — the team or player expected to lose; shown with a plus sign (+)
  • Push — when the outcome lands exactly on the spread or total; your bet is refunded
  • Cover — when a team wins by enough to beat the point spread
  • Payout — the total amount returned to you when you win (stake + profit)
  • ROI — return on investment; your profit or loss as a percentage of total bets placed

Account and Process Terms

  • Bet slip — the form (digital or paper) that shows the details of your wager
  • Stake — the amount of money you're risking on a bet
  • Rollover — a requirement to bet a certain amount before withdrawing a bonus
