Sports Betting Handicapping Step By Step

Handicapping a sports bet is not about having a hot take — it's a structured, step-by-step process that produces a price you can compare to the sportsbook's price to identify real value.

Most recreational bettors skip the process entirely. They see a matchup, form an opinion, and bet it at whatever price is offered. Sharp bettors do the opposite: they build a price first, then look for places where the market disagrees — and only then do they bet.

Step 1 — Establish a Power Rating for Each Team

A power rating is a number that represents how good a team is relative to an average opponent. You can use publicly available ratings (ESPN FPI, Sagarin, Vegas consensus power ratings) or build your own based on efficiency metrics. At minimum, assign each team an offensive and defensive rating.

From these ratings, project a point spread: home team's rating minus away team's rating, plus a standard home-field adjustment (3 points in NFL, 2–2.5 in college football, 2–3 in NBA).

Step 2 — Adjust for Situational Factors

Raw ratings don't account for specific game circumstances. Overlay these adjustments:

  • Rest advantage/disadvantage (days since last game)
  • Injury adjustments (starting quarterback impact, star player status)
  • Travel and schedule context (cross-country road game, divisional familiarity)
  • Weather (outdoor sports only)
  • Motivational spots (rivalry games, playoff implications, trap game potential)

Each factor shifts your projected spread by a fraction of a point. The combination creates a matchup-specific projection that is more accurate than raw ratings alone.

Step 3 — Compare Your Number to the Posted Line

If your model projects Team A at -4.5 and the book posts -2.5, that's a 2-point gap. Even adjusting for model uncertainty, that gap likely represents real value. If your model says -3 and the book says -3, there's no bet — you agree with the market.

Step 4 — Shop for the Best Available Price

Once you've identified a bet, shop across all available books for the best price on your side. Document the price you took versus the closing line.
