NFL Spread Betting Explained

The NFL point spread is the most-bet line in American sports — and understanding exactly how it works will immediately make you a more informed bettor.

Spread betting is the dominant format for NFL wagering, accounting for the majority of game-day handle at every major sportsbook. Here's a complete breakdown.

What the Point Spread Means

When you see a line like Kansas City Chiefs -6.5 vs. Las Vegas Raiders +6.5, it means:

  • To win a bet on the Chiefs, they must win by 7 or more points
  • To win a bet on the Raiders, they must either win outright or lose by 6 or fewer points

The spread is designed to create an even betting market — the book aims for equal action on both sides. Both sides are typically priced at -110, meaning you risk $110 to win $100.

Key Numbers in NFL Spread Betting

NFL games cluster around certain scoring margins due to the point structure of the sport. The most important key numbers are 3 (field goal) and 7 (touchdown + extra point). Historically, about 15% of NFL games end with a 3-point margin and about 9% end with a 7-point margin.

This means a spread of -3 or -7 is significantly more valuable than -3.5 or -7.5. Half-point prices ("buying the hook") are often worth paying at key numbers. Moving from -3 to -2.5 costs extra juice, but the protection against the most common margin is worth it.

How the Line Moves

NFL lines open Sunday night or Monday for the following weekend's games. Early movement is driven by sharp action from professional bettors. Public action flows in Wednesday through Saturday, often moving popular teams. The closing line is the most accurate — and comparing your entry price to the closing line tells you if your timing was good.

Building a Systematic Approach
