If Bets Sports Betting Explained

An "if bet" is a conditional wager where the second bet only activates if the first bet wins — making it a bankroll management tool as much as a betting vehicle.

If bets are less commonly discussed than parlays or teasers, but they serve a distinct and useful purpose for bettors who want to string wagers together without full parlay risk.

How an If Bet Works

You place two (or more) bets in sequence with a condition: the second bet is placed only if the first bet wins. If the first bet loses, your action stops and you don't risk money on the second game.

Example: You bet $100 on Team A, and "if" that bet wins, $100 goes on Team B. If Team A wins, $100 is automatically wagered on Team B. If Team A loses, no bet is placed on Team B and your total loss is capped at $100.

Contrast this with a parlay: both legs are active simultaneously, and both must win for a payout. In an if bet, you're sequencing risk rather than combining it.

If Bets vs. Parlays: When Each Makes Sense

The parlay pays more than two separate if bets when both legs win. But the if bet limits downside — your loss on a two-leg if bet is capped at the first bet's stake if the first leg loses. With a parlay, both bets are committed regardless.

If bets are most useful when your bankroll is limited and you want to protect against full exposure on a day's card of games, while still letting a winning bet fund another wager.

If/Reverse Bets

A reverse bet is two simultaneous if bets in opposite order — Bet A then B, and also Bet B then A. This covers both sequences and ensures you have action on both games regardless of which wins first. It's more expensive (you're essentially doubling your if bet stake) but provides two-directional protection.

Tracking Sequential Bets Accurately

If bets can be confusing to track after the fact — especially if you place them across multiple books. Oddible gives you a clear log of every bet placed, including conditional bets, so your record is complete.
