How to Use CLV to Improve Results

Closing line value — CLV — is the most important metric in sports betting, more predictive of long-term success than win rate, ROI, or any hot streak you can name.

CLV measures one thing: how the price you got compares to the price the market settled on at game time. If you bet a team at +3.5 and the line closed at +2.5, you beat the closing line by a full point. If you bet -6.5 and it closed at -8, you got the worse number. Over hundreds of bets, CLV tells you whether you're consistently finding value before the market corrects — or consistently buying into overpriced lines.

Why CLV Predicts Long-Term Success

Sportsbooks set closing lines efficiently. By kickoff, the market has absorbed sharp money, injury news, weather data, and massive volume. The closing price represents the collective wisdom of thousands of professional and recreational bettors.

When you consistently beat closing lines, it means you're identifying value before the market does — which is the definition of a profitable bettor. Studies of professional bettors show that positive CLV at scale (500+ bets) is one of the strongest predictors of continued profitability.

How to Calculate Your CLV

For each bet, compare your price to the closing price at the sharpest available book (Pinnacle is the gold standard). Convert both to no-vig probabilities and measure the difference.

Example: You bet -110 on a team. It closed -130 at Pinnacle. You got a better number — you beat the line. Over time, average your CLV across all bets. Bettors with +2% or better CLV over 500+ bets are legitimately beating the market.

What Negative CLV Means

Consistent negative CLV — betting at worse prices than the market closes — suggests you're systematically chasing public sides, buying late into sharp moves, or picking games where the book has better information than you. Negative CLV bettors can run hot for months but will regress toward a losing record.
