How to Use Alternate Lines for Better Value

Alternate lines are one of the most underused tools in sports betting — and knowing how to use them can give you access to prices the standard market rarely offers.

Every major sportsbook offers alternate spreads and totals, letting you buy points up or down from the standard line in exchange for adjusted odds. Used correctly, alternates let you either reduce risk or increase potential payout — but only when the math works in your favor.

How Alternate Lines Work

If a standard spread is -6.5 at -110, you might find an alternate at -3.5 priced at -190, or -9.5 at +130. The key question: are those prices offering fair value, or is the book extracting more vig through the alternate?

A fair price to move from -6.5 to -3.5 in NFL (buying three points) should cost roughly 6 points of juice per point, or about 18 points total, landing around -128. If the book is charging -190, you're overpaying. If they're offering -165, that might be a better deal than the standard line if you genuinely believe the game is close.

When to Move Off the Key Number

In NFL betting, the numbers 3 and 7 are critical. Games land on a three-point margin approximately 15% of the time. Buying from -2.5 to -3.5 (skipping the key number) makes no sense. But buying from -3.5 to -2.5 to get under the key number can be worth a premium — particularly in low-scoring games where three points is decisive.

Buying off 7 is similarly powerful. If a game is likely to be competitive and you can land on the right side of 7 for a reasonable price, the purchase often pays for itself over time.

Alternate Totals for Sharp Bettors

Alternate totals offer another dimension. If you think the weather is underpriced in a total market, betting an alternate under well below the posted number can give you a cushion while still maintaining solid expected value. Sharp bettors use alternates as a precision tool — not as a way to feel safer.
