Reading an NFL point spread takes 30 seconds to learn and a lifetime to master. Here's the complete, simple explanation.
A Real NFL Line
`` San Francisco 49ers -6.5 -110 Dallas Cowboys +6.5 -110 ``
San Francisco -6.5 means the 49ers are favored by 6.5 points. Betting the 49ers means they must win by 7+ points for your bet to win.
Dallas +6.5 means the Cowboys get 6.5 extra points. Betting Dallas means they can lose by up to 6 points and you still win. They don't need to win the game — just keep it within 6 points.
-110 on both sides means you bet $110 to win $100. This is standard NFL spread pricing.
Step-by-Step Bet Reading
- Identify the favorite: Negative number (the team listed with -6.5)
- Identify the underdog: Positive number (the team listed with +6.5)
- Understand what you need: Favorite must win by MORE than the spread. Underdog can lose by LESS than the spread.
- Note the price: -110 standard = bet $110, win $100. Sometimes -105 (better) or -115 (worse).
The Decision Process
Before picking a side:
- What do you think the actual margin of victory will be?
- Does your predicted margin favor the favorite spread or underdog spread?
- Is the price fair, or should you check another book?
If you think the 49ers win by 10 and the spread is -6.5, you have edge on the 49ers. If you think they win by only 5, you have edge on Dallas +6.5.
