How to Find Value in Prop Markets

Finding value in prop markets requires a different skill set than handicapping game lines — it's faster-moving, more data-intensive, and rewards bettors who have specialized knowledge in specific matchups and player roles.

Props are priced using statistical averages, recent performance data, and a healthy vig — sometimes 8–10% on both sides. But the lines often fail to account for individual matchup dynamics, situational usage changes, and the ripple effects of injuries to teammates. That's where the edge lives.

Start With Implied Usage

Every prop line implies a usage rate. If a running back's rushing yards prop is set at 68.5, the book is implying roughly 17 carries at 4.0 yards per carry. If you know the offense is running at 45% rush rate but the opponent allows only 3.6 yards per carry, the implied carries are probably correct but the yards per carry is generous — lean under.

Do this math before looking at the number. Having your own expectation before seeing the line keeps you objective. If you go number-first, you'll rationalize a bet rather than evaluate it.

Exploit Injury Ripple Effects

When a key player is ruled out, props for teammates move — but not always proportionally or immediately. If a starting wide receiver is ruled out Friday afternoon, his target share gets redistributed. The backup who now sees 8 targets instead of 3 often still has a prop set near last week's baseline. That's a real edge.

Also watch for quarterback changes. A backup QB throwing for a team that typically runs changes every skill player's prop significantly, and books don't always adjust instantly.

Target Low-Liquidity Props

Lower-profile props — kicker points, defensive player totals, team-specific live props — carry more inefficiency than high-profile quarterback passing yards. Books invest less pricing resources in these markets. If you have genuine expertise in a niche (say, NFL kicker usage by game script), low-volume props can be significantly more exploitable.
