How to Find Value in Futures Markets

Futures markets are where the biggest edges in sports betting hide — and where the most money is lost by bettors who don't understand how they're priced.

A futures bet is a wager on a long-term outcome: who wins the Super Bowl, the NBA Championship, or the MVP award. The appeal is obvious — big payouts from a small stake. But finding actual value requires a very different approach than betting individual games.

Why Futures Markets Are Inefficient

Futures lines are slower to update than game lines. A sportsbook might post Super Bowl odds in September and barely move them until January, even as teams dramatically improve or collapse. That lag creates windows where a team's true championship probability is meaningfully higher than the price on the board.

Additionally, public action distorts futures prices more than game lines. Large-market teams like the Cowboys, Lakers, and Yankees consistently carry inflated prices because casual bettors flood them with action — creating value on the other side.

Where to Find Real Value

The best futures value tends to appear in three situations:

  1. Early in the season — Books post conservative opening numbers before injury and performance data sharpens the market.
  2. After injuries to favorites — When a top contender loses a star player, the market often overreacts, deflating odds on the remaining field.
  3. Mid-season on overachievers — A team outperforming their preseason projection will see futures odds tighten, but often not as fast as their actual probability improves.

The Vig Problem in Futures

Futures markets carry a much higher vig than game markets — often 15-25% on a deep field. This means your edge needs to be substantial to overcome the built-in margin. Always calculate the total implied probability of a field (sum all contenders' implied probabilities) to see how much juice the book is charging.
