Soft lines are betting lines that are mispriced relative to their true probability. Finding them is the core skill of profitable sports betting.
Where Soft Lines Appear
Early in the week: Oddsmakers open lines early with limited information. Lines harden as the week progresses and sharp money acts.
Low-volume markets: Niche sports, international leagues, and small-market teams get less attention from oddsmakers and less sharp action to correct errors.
Player props: Opening props are often set from statistical averages without deep handicapping. Soft lines exist here regularly.
Breaking news windows: Injury news, lineup changes, and weather create brief windows before books adjust.
How to Identify a Soft Line
- Compare lines across multiple books — significant discrepancies signal that at least one book is off
- Compare to sharp offshore books (Pinnacle, circa) — if you're getting better than Pinnacle, you have a potentially soft line
- Check if the line has moved in your favor since opening — it might mean you found it before sharp money did
The Process
- Open at least 3-4 sportsbook accounts
- Follow injury and roster news early
- Check Pinnacle as your benchmark fair-value reference
- Act quickly — soft lines get corrected fast
