How to Bet on MLB for Beginners

Baseball betting is unlike any other sport — there are no point spreads, starting pitchers drive the majority of betting value, and a 162-game season gives disciplined bettors enormous opportunity.

Here's how to get started with MLB betting the right way.

How MLB Betting Works

The most important difference from football and basketball: MLB uses the moneyline and run line instead of a point spread.

Moneyline — pick which team wins the game outright. Because baseball games are often decided by 1–3 runs, the moneyline is the primary market for most bettors.

Run line — the MLB equivalent of a point spread. The standard run line is -1.5 for the favorite and +1.5 for the underdog. The favorite must win by 2+ runs; the underdog can lose by 1 and still cover. Run lines come with adjusted odds:

  • Favorite: -1.5 at around +120 to +145 (you're accepting more risk but getting better odds)
  • Underdog: +1.5 at around -140 to -165 (you give up some payout for the safety net)

Total (Over/Under) — set based on expected scoring. MLB totals typically range from 7 to 10 runs depending on pitching matchup.

Why Starting Pitchers Matter So Much

In no other major sport does one player impact the outcome as much as an MLB starting pitcher. The opening line is set with specific pitchers listed — if a listed starter is scratched, many books allow you to void the bet if you prefer.

Research starting pitcher stats before every game:

  • ERA (Earned Run Average) — lower is better
  • WHIP (Walks + Hits per Inning Pitched) — lower is better
  • Recent form and pitch counts
  • Performance vs. the opposing lineup historically

Tips for Beginner MLB Bettors

  • Focus on moneylines rather than run lines until you understand how each game plays out
  • Avoid large favorite moneylines (-200 and worse) — losing one costs two wins to recover
  • Look for value in games with overlooked starting pitcher advantages
  • Use a 162-game mindset — short losing streaks are completely normal in baseball
