How to Bet on Golf for Beginners

Golf betting is completely different from team sports — there are no point spreads, no moneylines on single opponents, and the top favorite to win any given tournament rarely has more than a 20% chance of doing so.

That unpredictability is exactly what makes golf betting exciting and potentially profitable with the right approach.

How Golf Betting Works

Tournament winner (outright) — the most common golf bet. You pick which golfer wins the entire 4-round tournament. Even the best player in the field typically starts at +600 to +1000. A less-known player might be +8000 or higher.

Because winners are so uncertain, most serious golf bettors spread their picks across several players rather than concentrating on one.

Head-to-head matchups — two golfers are paired against each other and you bet on which one shoots a lower score (for 18 holes, 36, or the full tournament). This is a much more predictable market than outright winners.

Top 5 / Top 10 / Top 20 finishes — instead of picking the winner, you bet on a golfer to finish within the top X. Lower risk, lower payout, but much more achievable.

Make/miss the cut — a bet on whether a golfer will make the 36-hole cut and play the weekend. Easier to research based on recent form and course fit.

Key Factors for Golf Betting Research

  • Course fit — does the golfer excel on courses that reward ball-striking, or putting? Match player strengths to course layout.
  • Recent form — golf form runs hot and cold. A player in the top 10 in their last three events is worth a closer look.
  • Strokes gained statistics — advanced metrics like Strokes Gained: Total, Approach, and Putting reveal true performance better than raw scores.
  • World ranking — lower-ranked players in weaker fields offer value opportunities.

Beginner Golf Betting Strategy

  • Spread your outright picks across 3–5 players rather than putting everything on one
  • Focus on head-to-head matchups early — they're the most beginner-friendly golf market
  • Keep golf bet sizes small relative to your bankroll given high variance
