When you place your bet matters almost as much as what you bet. Lines move from the moment they open to the moment the game starts. Knowing when to get in — and when to wait — can meaningfully improve your results.
Early Lines: Opportunity and Risk
Opening lines are set by oddsmakers using their models, but they're also posted at lower limits while the book gauges public reaction. This creates two types of opportunities:
Sharp early bettors move lines fast. If a sharp bettor sees a mispriced line and bets $50,000 early, the book adjusts immediately. Other sharp bettors who agree follow. Lines can move 1-2 points in the first hour after opening.
If you agreed with the sharp side before the line moved, you missed value. If you can identify which direction sharp money will move a line and bet ahead of it, you gain closing line value.
Early lines also carry more risk. Injury information from earlier in the week may be stale. Practice reports, depth chart changes, and weather forecasts aren't finalized days before the game.
Late Lines: Information Is Better, Value May Be Gone
By the time a game starts, most major information is priced in. Injury reports are final, weather is set, and sharp money has been applied. The late line is the most efficient version of that market.
If you bet the late line, you're less likely to be surprised by news — but you're also getting a number that's already been refined by sophisticated bettors. Most recreational bettors get better prices early (before the public piles in on popular teams) but better information late.
The Optimal Approach
For most recreational bettors:
- Bet unpopular sides early: If you're on the underdog or a team the public doesn't like, get it early before the public drives the popular side down.
- Wait on popular sides: If you're betting the public's favorite, sometimes the line improves as late public money comes in on the other side.
- Always check injuries before the game: No matter when you bet, verify the injury report on game day.
